The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is an armed force that protects India’s maritime interests and enforces maritime law, with jurisdiction over the territorial waters of India, including its contiguous zone and exclusive economic zone. The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 18 August 1978 by the Coast Guard Act, 1978 of the Parliament of India as an independent Armed force of India. It operates under the Ministry of Defence.
The Coast Guard works in close cooperation with the Indian Navy, the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Revenue (Customs) and the Central and State police forces.
Enrolled personnel in the Coast Guard serve as either a yantrik (technician) or navik (sailor).
- Yantriks are responsible for operating and maintaining mechanical, electrical or aeronautical equipment and systems onboard the Coast Guard vessels and aircraft.
- Naviks may further serve in the General-Duty or Domestic branches. The General-Duty naviks serve as sailors, weapons systems operators, communication specialists, divers, etc. or in specific maritime or aviation support roles. Domestic branch naviks serve in roles such as stewards, cooks, etc. onboard Coast Guard vessels.
Join Indian Coast Guard as Navik-General Duty 10+2 Entry-02/2020 Batch
Enrolled personnel of the Indian Coast Guard is trained along with Indian Naval sailors at the naval training establishment INS Chilka. All training undertaken by Coast Guard personnel is the same as those undertaken by sailors in the Indian Navy. All personnel is trained in the operation of weapons systems in cases of emergency.
Indian Coast Guard Navik GD Recruitment 2020:
The Indian Coast Guard has started the online application process for Indian Coast Guard recruitment 2020 for Navik (General Duty). A total of 260 vacancies will be filled through this year’s recruitment drive.
Interested and eligible candidates can apply for the Indian Coast Guard Navik GD 2020 exam by visiting the official website. Before filing up the Navik GD application form, have a look at the Navik GD eligibility criteria, age limit, selection process, cut off marks, job profile, training, and other notification details.
Selection Process of the Navik (General Duty) post will be based on the
- Written examination
- Physical fitness test
- Medical examination
The selected candidates then undergo a training process.

- Education Qualification: 10+2 passed with Maths and Physics from an education board recognized by Central/State Government with minimum 50% aggregate marks. 5% relaxation in minimum cut off will be given to SC/ST candidates and outstanding sports personnel of the National level who have obtained 1st, 2nd or 3rd position in any field sports events at the Open National Championship/ Inter-state National Championship.
- Age: Minimum 18 years and maximum of 22 years i.e. born between 01 Aug 1998 to 31 July 2002 (both dates inclusive). Upper age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC candidates.

The total post for Navik (GD) 02/2020 batch is 260 (approximately).

How to Apply:
Applications will be accepted Online only from 26 Jan 2020 to 2 Feb 2020. Candidates are to login https://joinindiancoastguard.gov.in/ and click on the opportunities button. The important instructions for filling of online application are:
- The Name of the Candidate, Father and Mother’s name and date of birth should be mentioned as per 10th class certificate.
- Indicate the exact percentage of 12th class up to two decimals and this is not to be rounded off.
- Filling up of information like email ID and mobile number of the candidate are compulsory.
- The date, time and Center of the written examination and other information will be informed through the Coast Guard Recruitment website https://joinindiancoastguard.gov.in/.
- The application provides the choice of only one center for examination. The candidate is to choose a center from the list mentioned against each state to which he belongs to.
Fill all the details very carefully, all the * entries are compulsory. Click on “I Agree” button after filling all the details in the online application form.
Written Examination for Navik GD:
The Navik GD written exam will be conducted in an objective Multiple Choice Questions format which generally covers the following subjects:
- Maths
- Physics
- Basic Chemistry
- Knowledge of English up to 12th class
- General Knowledge
- Current Affairs
- Quantitative Aptitude
- Reasoning
Navik GD Physical Fitness Test (PFT):
Those candidates who qualify the written examination will undergo Physical Fitness Test (PFT). The testing procedure for PFT will take about two days. Physically challenged candidates are not eligible to apply for this examination. The PFT consists of:
- 1.6 Km run in 7 minutes
- 20 Squat ups (Uthak Baithak)
- 10 Push up
List of Documents required for Navik GD Medical Exam:
- 3 copies of online e-admit card with the latest photograph
- 2 copies of application form
- Original class 10th passing certificate
- Original class 12th passing certificate
- Caste certificate
- Income certificate for EWS category candidates
- Identity Proof – Passport/driving license/Aadhar card/Voter I-Card/Pan Card
- SC/ST/OBC/PwD certificate for respective category candidates
The final list of selected candidates will be prepared after qualifying in all tests depending upon the available vacancies. The Zone wise list of selected candidates will be displayed on the Indian Coast Guard website https://joinindiancoastguard.gov.in/ in the month of July 2020.
Training:
The basic training of selected candidates will commence in Aug 2020 at INS Chilka followed by sea training and Professional Training in the allotted trades. Branch/trade will be allocated as per the requirement of service and performance during basic training.
